Historically, perinatal mental health disorders have been under-diagnosed and under-treated, mostly due to the stigma surrounding this supposed happy time in a woman's life, the failure of physicians to ask about mental health issues and the lack of experts available to treat this population. My primary role as a perinatal psychiatrist for the past 20+ years has been to treat women who struggle with anxiety and depression across vulnerable life stages: while trying to conceive, pregnant and postpartum. My new clinic, BRIA, is a virtual women's mental health platform that is a one-stop shop for reproductive mental health supports across the reproductive life cycle.
